Mama’s Life RUles: s1e05 – Drag School of Charm

Hey everyone! It’s been a few weeks since my last update in this series, due to Christmas, travelling home to see family and various birthdays I hadn’t gotten a chance to watch some classic RPDR and present those little nuggets of knowledge and lost factoids that you know and love. So here we go, 2017, baby!

This episode introduced the classic RPDR mainstay makeover challenge, kicking off with female fighters from boxing, mma and Krav Maga. So this week we have a double serving of fish, with the queens joined by Tempele, Michelle, Sweepee et al. And for a challenge about introducing others to the craft of drag, we learn wisdom such as:

It’s not just about looking good, or being a good character. You actually do need quite a lot of endurance and physicality to be a successful drag queen.
With the mini challenge of a workout competition, it kinda shows that some queens would never have won this series. Tammie Brown and Porkchop would not have done as well in this week, so it seems like this would have been a weeding-out point. But who knows, anything is possible…
We also learned that anyone has the potential to become anything. We all know RuPaul says that “were all born naked and the rest is drag”, but seeing some of these tough fighter women become feminine queens shows how transformative drag is.
Bebe informs her girl that drag is a separate section of a queens life, it’s not an attempt to trick guys into thinking they’re real women, or that they want to be real women. Drag queen is a career!
“A woman in a pantsuit is great. A drag queen in a pantsuit, without tucking, is a man!” – Santino. (Not like that’s a quote that can coke back to haunt *cough*Katya*cough*
The elimination in this episode really highlights how big a decision RuPaul has to make every week. She’s visibly struggling with the choice and has to take time out to decide.
